You can bash these guys but, I guarantee you, the NCAA is taking this very seriously. At stake are billions of dollars generated by football and men's basketball. The NCAA uses this money to, among other things, fund volleyball, golf, crew, etc. If this lawsuit is successful and school's have to begin "paying" current athletes, all other sports will suffer.

Face it, the NCAA has milked this cash cow for a long time. I'm suprised it's taken so long for this to come to a head.

ND to the BIG-10 makes a lot of sense geographically and it could make sense financially, but ND home games against BIG-10 opponents would still have to be telecast on NBC. ND can still play a national schedule provided the number of BIG-10 games is eight or less (without counting the conference's championship game).

The aim here is likely just to get the NCAA to settle with the class-members. Their likelihood of success might be slim, but if they were to succeed the consequences for the NCAA could be drastic. They'd be rolling the dice on which side Kennedy, a libertarian, might flop (with the conservatives or the liberals).
Excellent point, Beachman. Most coaches probably don't want to be getting commitments from 14, 15 and 16 year olds. But as long as a few do, most will feel they have to.

Then, they can use their college degree to earn a salary for the rest of their lives (if they don't play pro and get rich.) If the athletes don't take advantage of that opportunity by dropping-out of college to play pro (or major in basket-weaving,) that's not the fault of the NCAA.

Excellent point. If the NCAA is required to pay these athletes, will they be able to receive funds back from the athletes who use their time in college athletics to hone their skills to a point where they can command larger dollars than they could have at 18?

For example, how much money could the 2009 NFL pick, Matthew Stafford, made coming out of high school? Compare that to the $41.7 million guaranteed he signed for through the experience and refining of his skills during his college career. How much should the NCAA be able to charge for providing him an opportunity to do so?

And, how much did Ed O'Bannon earn as a pro coming out of high school? Probably not as much as he did as the 9th pick in the draft.

Ed, I'm sorry you aren't a multi-millionaire now. But you probably made more money coming out of college than most. And it had nothing to do with your intellectual abilities but rather the forum the NCAA provided to showcase your skills.

The fact is that some coaches chose to not get into the 'bidding wars' as I like to call me and go after kids who were only entering their 11th grade in HS.....those coaches, one whom I know very well, lost his ass doing it that way....most coaches today, who want to be competitive, are out working on their Class of 2012 right now, and have their 2011 incoming freshmen already in the fold(at least as much in the fold as they can be until they sign their LOI)....If you can't beat em you join em and until the NCAA puts a stop to this stuff or starts treating volleyball players like they do basketball and football players who transfer, this trend will just continue on.....IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!
